Schools & Education

In 1852, a man named John Reed Hilliard purchased 10 acres of farmland located in western Franklin County. The land was originally called Hilliard’s Station, and a town grew around the railroad route of the Piqua and Indiana Railroad station, which bisected John Reed Hilliard’s farmland. The station served as a shipping point for agricultural products going out and supplies coming into local farmers. The original area of Hilliard was platted by John Hilliard on September 1, 1853.

Until the middle of the 20th century, the railroad station and Main Street served as the town center. A post office was established in the station in 1854, and the word “Station” was dropped from the town’s name. Hilliard was incorporated as a village in 1869, with a population of 280.

The construction of three major residential subdivisions brought substantial growth to Hilliard in the 1950s. The village became a city in 1960, with a population of 5,633. The city experienced a second wave of growth in the early 1970s with the completion of the I-270 outer-belt.
